New tropical products for 2017 from the National Hurricane Center

The National Hurricane Center is always evolving and trying to issue the best products that communicate their message to the public.

Some products that we used during Hurricane Matthew become “operational” this year — as well as some new products for 2017.

Here are the highlights:

– The Storm Surge Watch/Warning becoming operational

Example of Storm Surge Watch and Warning graphic from Hurricane Matthew in October 2016.

– The issuance of watches, warnings and advisories for potential tropical cyclones (huge for in-close development!)

– An experimental Time of Arrival of Tropical-Storm-Force Winds graphic

New graphic that will be produced by NHC for estimated time of arrival for tropical storm force winds.

– Updated look of the tropical cyclone advisory graphical products

New forecast cone graphic for 2017. “One significant enhancement is the addition of the current extent of hurricane- and tropical-storm-force winds to the cone graphic, which will help illustrate that hazardous conditions can occur well outside of the track forecast cone.”

– Annual update to the track forecast error cone (smaller due to forecast improvements)
